Why medicine is the career this AI researcher recommends to high schoolers worried about automation
dioscuri · x · 2026-10-01
When giving talks on AI to high schoolers, the author is often asked about career choices, and his usual recommendation is medicine, for three reasons:
- Highly interpersonal: care hinges on human communication and trust, hard to automate
- Mixed cognitive and physical tasks: combines broad intellectual judgment with hands-on work
- Heavily regulated: licensing and regulatory barriers naturally slow AI displacement
A concrete answer to the widespread anxiety about which careers will survive AI, arguing that interpersonal, regulated professions are comparatively safe.
