MIT uses AI to design thermostable mRNA vaccines that need no cold chain
rohanpaul_ai · x · 2026-10-01
MIT engineers used AI to find a new mRNA vaccine formulation that stabilizes the lipid nanoparticles, letting vaccines sit at room temperature for a full year and survive 100°F heat for two months.
- Removes the cold-chain barrier for distributing vaccines to poor countries
- Could enable easy skin-patch delivery instead of shots
- AI replaced exhaustive trial-and-error, reaching a thermostable formulation in weeks instead of months
The work applies to RNA vaccines being developed for cancer and other diseases as well.
