Google Called the Bell Labs of AI: Transformer, MusicLM, MoE, TPU All Born There
AccBalanced · x · 2026-10-01
Robert Graham argues Google is the "Bell Labs" of the 2020s: like Bell Labs invented the transistor, Unix and C without always profiting, modern AI's core tech came out of Google's labs. AestherML lists the evidence: Transformer before OpenAI, MusicLM before Suno, MoE before Anthropic, and TPU before Cerebras. For decades Google was the AI company with no competition — the view is that it hasn't capitalized on its inventions so far, but if it decides to win, no competitor can match it.
