$2M manufacturing AI startup is just a dashboard with 3 OpenAI API calls
RexDouglass · x · 2026-10-01
A manufacturing founder recounts auditing a startup that raised $2M to "revolutionize the factory floor with AI" — only to find a dashboard, cloud-piped machine data, 3 OpenAI API calls, and a database burning tens of thousands monthly on compute to tell plant managers what an experienced supervisor sees walking the floor.
His take: a $200 edge computer, MTConnect, a properly structured database, and a few deterministic rules could solve 90% of the problem. Manufacturing needs infrastructure that understands machines, tooling, quality, downtime, labor, capacity, and flow — not more AI wrappers.
