OpenAI Foundation funds cancer immunology research with data from 200 patients, all open-sourced
anshulkundaje · x · 2026-10-01
Responding to skepticism that OpenAI's life science efforts are mere PR, researcher Benjamin G. Vincenzo says the OpenAI Foundation is funding substantive work: genomics, immunopeptidomics, antigen-specific T cell response measurement, and TCR profiling on samples from 200 cancer patients, plus TCR-T performance comparisons. All data will be freely available for training better HLA peptide-presentation and immunogenicity models. The foundation is also funding a clinical trial comparing neoantigen vaccine formulations with immunological potency as the endpoint — a trial biotech/pharma would never run since they don't want proprietary methods to lose.
