A finished LoRA run doesn't mean it learned the style: a reproducible SDXL validation workflow
no3us · reddit · 2026-10-01
A hands-on walkthrough for training an SDXL style LoRA in LoRA Pilot and rigorously testing whether it actually learned the style.
Key idea: a training run can finish without producing a useful LoRA—it may copy reference images, ignore half the prompt, or only work on certain seeds.
Workflow highlights:
- Write the success criterion first: new subjects should reproduce the linework, color and texture while following the requested composition (asking for a bicycle and getting the training cottage = failure)
- 24 distinct illustrations as a working set; drop near-duplicates, keep a few out as visual references
- Prepare captions in TagPilot: consistent trigger word (e.g. mivinkstyle) first, short comma-separated descriptions of what varies
- Check pretrainedmodelnameorpath and vae paths in TrainPilot's TOML before training; record the checkpoint and use the same base model for first evaluation
- Compare saved versions under identical conditions in ComfyUI
