Edward Kmett ships Turbo Haskell: a GraalVM JIT for GHC Core that can compile GHC itself
rickasaurus · x · 2026-10-01
Edward Kmett has publicly released THC (Turbo Haskell Compiler), a Truffle/GraalVM-based JIT for GHC Core that started as a vacation joke a week ago and now implements every GHC 9.14.1 prim-op.
- GHC keeps handling parsing, typechecking, desugaring, and Core optimization; THC compiles and runs Core on its own Truffle runtime, fully supporting Template Haskell and Linear Haskell
- Works as both a JIT and an AOT compiler via Native Image, already building pandoc, happy, alex, and GHC itself; Cabal-based with multi-library and Backpack support
- Polyglot FFI to Python, Ruby, R, and JavaScript with zero-copy UTF-8 string conversion, letting Haskell call data-frame, D3.js, or LLM libraries directly
