Sakana AI CEO David Ha: the future of AI lies in orchestrators, not one giant model
SakanaAILabs · x · 2026-10-01
Sakana AI co-founder and CEO David Ha published an op-ed in Nikkei Asia, "The Future of AI Lies in Orchestrators":
- The frontier race of scaling models with massive compute is hitting limits: open model gaps have shrunk to months, and inference costs of cutting-edge models sometimes exceed the hourly wage of the people they serve
- The "one model rules all" paradigm is a dead end; value will shift from model weights to intelligence that routes and combines multiple models per situation—the inspiration behind the company's schooling-fish name
- On sovereign AI: "sovereignty isn't closing your country, it's supply-chain strength"—the ability to develop, coordinate, and operate AI domestically, without depending on a single vendor, able to keep running via alternate paths if cut off
- Japan lacks abundant compute, power, and capital, so it must win through smarter mechanisms; Sakana will keep pursuing this from Japan
