Google researcher unveils TabFM-Auto, pairing tabular foundation models with LLM world knowledge
robinomial · x · 2026-10-01
Deqing Fu, a summer researcher at Google Research, introduced TabFM-Auto, aimed at combining the complementary strengths of two model families:
- LLMs carry rich world knowledge and semantic understanding but struggle with massive tables containing millions of numeric cells;
- Tabular foundation models excel at tabular in-context learning yet lack semantic knowledge.
TabFM-Auto is designed to bridge the gap between semantic reasoning and large-scale tabular number handling. Technical details are in the linked post.
