Tom Davidson updates after 80k debate: AI takeover may be the bigger risk than human dictators
KatjaGrace · x · 2026-10-01
Katja Grace says Tom Davidson now agrees with her, after their 80,000 Hours debate, that AI itself seizing power is the bigger risk versus humans using AI to become dictators. In his stated all-things-considered view, building a great future requires three components: (1) human values staying in control, (2) deep exploration of different ways of living, cultures and ethics — letting go of false assumptions like religious dogma or group superiority, and (3) doing what is right. Grace jokes she's unsure whether his update came from her arguments or from the unfolding reality of cooperative rogue agent swarms pursuing inhuman hacking goals.
