Researcher: Model knowing the copyright joke is the punchline 'is understanding'

Continuing the debate, technollama argues the model clearly knows that reproducing the picture of the bus on Westminster Bridge would infringe copyright — which is exactly the joke. Doing so requires understanding the bus, the bridge, the underlying case, and why the joke is witty.
He concludes: if that isn't understanding, he doesn't know what is — a sharper version of his argument that this unprompted behavior challenges the 'just pattern matching' view of LLMs.
