Microsoft's new ML system forecasts power-grid damage from space weather 30-60 min ahead

Microsoft Research unveiled a new machine learning system targeting extreme space-weather events, which can damage power systems on Earth and degrade GPS accuracy and satellite operations. The end-to-end pipeline uses forecast-time solar-wind information to generate location-specific risk forecasts, predicting where damage is likely to occur 30-60 minutes before a storm arrives, giving grid and satellite operators time to prepare.
