Stripe launches MPP, letting AI agents pay for APIs via stablecoins with no checkout UI

Stripe introduced MPP (Machine Payments Protocol), an open protocol co-authored with Tempo that lets AI agents programmatically pay for APIs and services without a checkout UI: servers return an HTTP 402 with payment details, the agent authorizes and retries. Stripe argues agents make microtransactions far more often than humans and stablecoins fit best; merchants no longer handle crypto specifics like gas facilitation—Stripe covers it and funds land in your Stripe balance.
