Anthropic says its AI generated a proof resolving a decades-old "holy grail" conjecture in percolation theory.
- The open question was whether the phase transition is continuous in dimensions 3 through 10; continuity was already known in 1D, 2D, and dimensions 11+.
- The AI-generated proof shows the transition is continuous there too, closing the decades-old gap.
- Mathematician Benedikt Jahnel said a human solving this could plausibly have earned a Fields Medal; 2022 Fields Medalist Hugo Duminil-Copin tried and failed, predicting in late August it was only a matter of time before AI beat humans.
