A developer building an interactive Anatomy & Physiology textbook added an AI assistant inside the book, then asked: with ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini already available, what justifies an in-book assistant? His answer, four differentiators:
- Knows where you are — it carries the current chapter, section and figures as context, so "explain this differently" just works.
- Turns material into study formats — flashcards, mind maps, infographics, audio reviews on demand, ideally learning which approaches help.
- Tests you, not just answers — a role reversal: the AI quizzes, checks answers and explains misunderstandings ("Quiz me on this section").
- Orchestrates existing AI study tools — instead of rebuilding everything, he used NotebookLM to pre-generate infographics, flashcards, questions and podcast-style audio reviews embedded into relevant chapters.
He also published a YouTube demo and asks for more skill suggestions. The pattern — context awareness, active quizzing, tool orchestration — is a useful reference for education AI products.
