Meta dodges billions in US taxes by classifying AI data centers as experiments
The Decoder · rss · 2026-10-01
Per the New York Times, Meta classifies its AI data centers as "pilot models" and Nvidia chips as experimental materials to claim R&D tax credits dating back to 1981 — saving $3.9 billion in 2025 alone. Even Meta's own accountants view the strategy as legally risky, and Zuckerberg said in January 2025 that these centers would "drive our core products and business," contradicting the experimental framing.
