Google DeepMind announced SynthID Bio, a function-preserving watermarking method for AI-generated proteins, published in Nature with the tools open-sourced.
- Proof of concept: the team successfully synthesized AI-designed proteins that are both functional and watermarked, embedding provenance signals without breaking the protein.
- Motivation: as generative biology tools like AlphaFold 3 accelerate protein design, tracking the provenance of AI-generated sequences matters for biosecurity and IP concerns. Demis Hassabis called biosecurity one of the most urgent challenges of the AI era.
