DeepMind watermarking preserves AI-designed protein function, but markers can be erased

Google DeepMind has new work on watermarking AI-generated proteins in a way that preserves protein function and design quality. A Nature piece on the development notes such digital markers could help flag proteins devised by tools like AlphaFold—but the marker can be erased.
The author also discussed watermarking and other strategies for tracking generative AI outputs in biology with Science Magazine, and former student Zaixi Zhang discussed this work and the related FoldMark approach with Nature.
