Google DeepMind announced SynthID Bio, a tool that embeds a detectable signature into AI-designed proteins, published in Nature. The watermark survives physical synthesis in labs.
- Goals: biosecurity (helping DNA synthesis firms screen orders from trusted AI tools) and scientific integrity (distinguishing AI-generated structures from experimentally measured ones).
- Results: watermarked proteins functioned as well as unwatermarked versions in lab tests.
- Limits: the watermark doesn't prove safety, and resisting deliberate removal remains a challenge. Project initiated by Pushmeet Kohli.
