Developer Open-Sources AI Chat Front Door Prototype for Canada.ca

Developer RichardsonDx released gov-ca, an open-source prototype of a conversational "AI front door" for Canadian government services, built on the gov.ca Concept design (hero, maple-leaf lockup, moment carousel, chat pill) and wired to a working agentic chat.
How it works:
- Ask a question in the hero pill, or tap a quick chip like Passport or Taxes
- You land in a dedicated thread (#/chat) where the assistant works in the open: a status line morphs through "Working through your request..." → "Searching Canada.ca..." → "Reading official sources..." → "Writing your answer...", with elapsed seconds ticking
- Each finished tool round collapses into an expandable one-line trace chip showing queries and page titles, never raw JSON
- The answer streams in
Built on the Web Renewal Initiative's foundation and powered by the user's own OpenAI key, it is unaffiliated with the Government of Canada. The author notes Canada has already consolidated 1,500+ sites and argues a well-designed AI front door would be valuable.
