Cloudflare launches Monetization Gateway beta: charge AI agents per request with HTTP 402

Cloudflare announced its Monetization Gateway in closed beta: domain owners can charge AI agents for access to their websites, APIs, MCP tools, or datasets on a per-request, per-query, or per-token basis using HTTP 402 — no separate payment infrastructure needed. The company argues subscription/prepaid models don't match how agents consume (they seek outcomes), and payments must align with agents' consumption units; four customer use cases are already in production, three months after the plan was first announced. Access requests are open in the Cloudflare Dashboard.
