Cloudflare launches Monetization Gateway beta to charge AI agents per request via HTTP 402

Cloudflare opened its Monetization Gateway to a closed beta, letting domain owners charge AI agents for access to sites, APIs, MCP tools, and datasets. It uses the HTTP 402 status code inline with the resource request, settles via Coinbase's x402 Facilitator on Base using USDC, and offers flexible pricing rules matched to any part of a request. Production use cases include Cloudflare AI Gateway (pay-per-request inference via a PAYMENT-METHOD: x402 header), Ceramic.ai (agent-paid web search over a 40B-page index, 50ms responses), and Stocktwits (per-request stock signal purchases).
