Cloudflare rebuilds Containers for agent sandboxes: 6x faster startups, 648ms median
michellechen · x · 2026-09-30
Cloudflare announced a rearchitecture of Containers optimized for agent workloads, since agents create sandboxes on demand per task, expect them instantly, and need pause/resume.
Key updates:
- Code can now pick each sandbox's image and instance type at runtime
- ComputeSDK's independent benchmark shows median startup fell from over 4 seconds to 648ms (6x faster); Cloudflare's burst tests created hundreds of thousands of containers in seconds
- Filesystem Snapshots are now in public beta
- A new scheduling policy moves sandbox control into application code; every Container still pairs with a Durable Object as its persistent controller, now reachable via the native ctx.container API with no wrapper class, a model carried into Sandbox SDK 1.0
Positioning: Containers complement Workers, Dynamic Workers, and Durable Objects when agents need a full Linux workspace.
