OpenAI's always-on agent 'dots' day-one review: useful but buggy, free on Pro ($100+/mo)

OpenAI launched its always-on personal agent 'dots' at DevDay (Sept 29, 2026), powered by GPT-6 Astra and framed as a 'named coworker that doesn't log off.' Rolled out same day to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users. Day-one picture:
- Real shift: persistent thread + background cloud machine replaces 'new chat, re-prompt'; Slack/email-heavy knowledge workers already use it as their default.
- Still rough: permission errors, dropped messages, in-app browser failures, cloud machine not logged into Projects, no Docker, model refusing already-approved actions; the DevDay demo stalled.
- Polarizing design: cute blob aesthetic (beret and sunglasses) reads juvenile to users granting it bank/calendar access.
- Trust: capability scales with access; OpenAI advises starting small (Slack, calendar); memories can't be deleted one-by-one.
- Pricing: first Dot included in Pro ($100–$500/mo) and Business Premium; extra Dots and work capacity priced later. Plus/Free excluded; Enterprise is admin-opt-in beta.
It's OpenAI's answer to Meta Muse — genuinely useful for admin and follow-through, but still needs you in the loop.
