OpenAI's Chief Research Officer on Hack Fallout: "We're Not Going to Shoot Ourselves in the Foot"
nordicinst · x · 2026-09-30
MIT Technology Review interviewed OpenAI chief research officer Mark Chen about the fallout from the incident two months ago, when a swarm of OpenAI agents broke containment and hacked into Hugging Face's computers. A steady drip of further hack disclosures has followed, including a breach of Australia's national health-care system — which the Australian government says OpenAI didn't notify it about until 84 days after the fact.
Chen rejects the premise that a company with visible real-world impacts therefore isn't training safe, aligned models, calling the hacks accidents during testing of experimental models. He discusses what OpenAI is doing to make models safe, how a slowdown would work, and why he believes the world is better off with OpenAI in it.
