Google pays ~100 publishers little for AI answers, from under $1,000 to $1M+ a year

According to The Information, Google pays about 100 digital publishers for content used in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini answers. Payments range from under $1,000 over several months to more than $1 million a year; some participants don't know how the amounts are calculated, and some larger publishers are holding out for higher rates.
