Unverified leak from markk: GPT-6.1 Sol was originally planned as "Astra Minor," a considerably more powerful model. After Anthropic shipped Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, OpenAI reportedly decided Sol needed something stronger and repurposed it as GPT-6.1.
A quoted comparison running the same prompt ("animate a cyclist riding a bicycle") in Codex at xhigh shows a huge quality gap between GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Sol, with the newer model described as finally living up to the Sol name.
