Google donates Agent Substrate to CNCF as runtime layer for large-scale agents

Google is donating Agent Substrate to CNCF, with the sandbox proposal accepted. The project provides a high-density, low-latency runtime for large-scale AI agent deployments on Kubernetes: a control plane manages full agent-sandbox lifecycle with sub-second suspend/resume, multiplexing many agents onto shared compute. It supports microVMs and gVisor sandboxes, exploiting the fact that agent-like apps are mostly idle to map many actors onto fewer ready workers. Googlers say it could become the underlying compute runtime for all agentic systems.
