ANTMAN: need-graph coordination scales 16x context with only 1.23x overhead
UIUC-CS · hf · 2026-09-30
ANTMAN, from UIUC, is an adaptive coordination framework for multi-agent search over large information spaces. Static partition-driven systems scale coordination with how information is segmented rather than what the query still needs.
- Treats evolving unresolved information needs as the unit of runtime coordination, maintaining a revisable Need Graph of requirements, evidence, prior attempts, and progress to drive worker selection, routing, and task-local recovery
- Decouples coordination policy from substrate-specific interfaces, so one mechanism works across different information spaces
- Effective across multi-doc QA, long-context scaling, and structured navigation, even when delegating to much smaller worker models
- Under 16x more searchable context, active coordination grows only 1.23x vs 15x+ for partition baselines, with answer quality preserved
