Ryan Williams shares context: he has used the Alon-Yuster-Zwick color coding trick across many papers, and about two years ago attempted to derive this very circuit bound — a simpler version of the trick computes At-Least-k with e^k·poly(n)-size depth-3 circuits — but gave up too quickly. Seeing the result now is a humbling surprise.
