The author open-sourced Freebuff MCP, a bridge that lets Codex, Claude Code, and other MCP clients work directly with Freebuff Desktop and its CLI through a consistent MCP interface (MCP client → canonical session/turn layer → Desktop or CLI backend).
- Supports finding projects/threads, sending prompts, watching live progress, stopping turns, resuming paused work, changing model settings, and inspecting changed files
- Built with TypeScript/Node.js, the MCP SDK, node-pty for interactive CLI sessions, HTTP + SSE for Desktop, Zod, plus an experimental ACP adapter and a large automated test suite
- Key lesson: an MCP wrapper is easy, but correct failure behavior is hard — prompts misreported as completed turns, cancellations that only stopped the local request, progress streams falsely reported as connected
- Design details: bridge IDs kept separate from real Freebuff IDs, bounded event store with sequence cursors, cancellation propagated to the owning backend with confirmation, SSE reconnect/Last-Event-ID handling
- Security layer restricts file reads, blocks credential files, rejects binary/oversized files, and redacts secrets
