Google Research unveils Diffusion Controller, a lightweight damper for precise image steering

Google Research introduced Diffusion Controller, a lightweight "steering damper" network that steers text-to-image generation at inference time for much better prompt alignment without destabilizing the base model.
- The problem: prompts like "a lizard wearing sunglasses" either get ignored or, when forced, distort the image; existing control methods are fragmented between inference-time guidance (classifier-free guidance) and heavy fine-tuning (LoRA, reward-weighted regression, policy gradients), with no unified mathematical framework.
- Key selling point: it can attach seamlessly even to closed-source, access-restricted models, boosting quality and intent consistency without fine-tuning.
