Autonomous AI agents are killing the ad-supported web — and advertisers are paying for bot views

A Reddit post argues that browsing agents that scrape articles, ignore display ads, and bypass affiliate links are eroding the attention economy that funds the free web. Ad impressions either never fire or fire on headless browsers that will never convert. The predicted downward spiral: publishers lose revenue or paywall aggressively, advertisers pull budgets once metrics are polluted by bots, and the open web stops being profitable to maintain. Major platforms are already locking down APIs; the open question is whether ad networks will eventually inject ads directly into personal AI agents.
