Cloudflare to become a public CA, acquiring GlobalSign root and joining four root programs
dinasaur_404 · x · 2026-09-29
Cloudflare announced its intent to become a public certificate authority. It has applied to the Chrome, Apple, Microsoft, and Mozilla root programs and signed a definitive agreement to acquire a broadly trusted root from GlobalSign, so certificates will reach most devices from day one. It also plans to be among the first CAs issuing post-quantum certificates, targeting Chrome's quantum-resistant root program. No certificates are being issued yet, but the company is committing publicly to milestones. The post explains why new roots take years to propagate and how acquiring an established root short-circuits that.
