Ex-Anthropic researcher Finbarr Timbers offers a counterfactual: the $200/month GPT Pro subscription delivers roughly $6k/month of API-equivalent usage largely because Anthropic exists as a competitor.
His reasoning: competitive pressure has already squeezed that quota down from $6k to $3k/month, and had Anthropic never existed—leaving OpenAI to compete only against Google et al.—the quota would likely have settled around $1k. The "value" of premium subscriptions is a competitive dividend, not generosity.
