Mayo Clinic AI model predicts pancreatic cancer risk 3 years before diagnosis

Researchers at Mayo Clinic presented an AI model at the ACS Clinical Congress 2026 that mined routine health records from nearly 40,000 patients to detect subtle early signals of pancreatic cancer, reliably separating high-risk from low-risk individuals up to three years before diagnosis.
Pancreatic cancer is expected to cause 67,000 new cases and 52,000 deaths in 2026—about 3% of new cancers but 8% of cancer deaths—and fewer than one in five patients is diagnosed in time. Surgical oncologist Cornelius Thiels said early detection is the key to curability, and the model could meaningfully improve those odds.
