Anthropic breaks down Claude effort levels: when Max is overkill and when it pays off
rubenhassid · x · 2026-09-29
Anthropic has published an official breakdown of how Claude's effort levels work, and rubenhassid distills it into a practical selection guide: higher effort gives the model more room to check its own work, catch mistakes, and make decisions on your behalf — at the cost of time.
The tier-by-tier advice:
- Low: quick drafts you'll read and iterate on
- Medium: clear goals — provide details, review the output
- High: detail-sensitive tasks — ask it to self-check for errors and gaps
- Extra high: tangled problems — point out what's wrong and have it compare options
- Max: big, complex jobs — answer its questions first, review its choices after
Bottom line: don't burn Max effort rewriting an email; save it for proposals that genuinely need thorough checking.
