SUMI distills PCCT look into regular CT scans: SSIM +35%, but clinical benefit unproven

Andreas Maier reviews a 2026 arXiv preprint on SUMI, which aims to 'distill' the visual advantages of photon-counting CT (PCCT) into routine energy-integrating CT scans without paired acquisitions that would double radiation exposure.
- Method: a massive autoencoder trained on 405,000+ CT volumes from 145 hospitals across 19 countries plus 1,046 high-quality PCCT scans models the degradation of PCCT images on conventional scanners, then a network inverts it
- Results: SSIM +35%, PSNR +19% on degraded PCCT data, and nodule-detection sensitivity up 13.5 points
- Caveat: only simulated EICT artefacts were used, no real paired scans, so clinical benefit and true resolution gain remain unproven
