Bain says AI must earn $6T a year by 2031 — matching all global IT spending today

Bain's 2026 Global Technology Report (reported by Bloomberg) lays out a stark math problem: to justify the data centers being built now, the AI industry needs $6 trillion in annual revenue by 2031 — roughly equal to Gartner's forecast for total worldwide IT spending in 2026 ($6.37T).
Key breakdown:
- Existing consumer and enterprise AI services should bring in about $1.8 trillion;
- The remaining $4.2 trillion must come from segments that are still nascent;
- For context, public cloud — twenty years after AWS launched — is far smaller than that gap.
The author's core point: if the revenue gap can't be closed, the current wave of massive compute investment is hard to justify.
