Gates' real warning: AI is dual-use by design and intent doesn't show up in model weights

Bill Gates told NBC's Meet the Press that AI is "powerful enough to drive events that cause a billion deaths," but the sharper point is his dual-use framing:
- There is no technical line between a "helpful biology AI" and a "dangerous biology AI" — the same models that fold proteins and accelerate drug discovery differ only by intent, which "doesn't show up in a model weights file."
- Designing a novel protein went from PhD-level months of work to an API call; Gates warned in January that non-state groups using open-source AI to design bioweapons now outweigh natural pandemic risk.
- Governance moves at committee speed while capabilities move in weeks. Gates wants mandatory oversight, not slower innovation: "No one thinks self-regulation is enough."
The author argues we're living the "long middle stretch" of the sci-fi scenario — trajectory visible, safeguards perpetually in progress.
