Google Cloud's Darren Mowry (VP, Global Startups) argues production AI apps shouldn't send every call to a single frontier model, but run a compound stack: frontier APIs for complex synthesis, compact open-weight models for the rest. A frontier-only architecture strains on three fronts: latency (cloud round trips block sub-second interactivity), infrastructure overhead (self-hosting 70B+ models turns startups into infra teams), and margin erosion (routing high-frequency structured tasks like intent routing and JSON extraction to general endpoints burns capital). He lists four workloads better served by open models: edge/local execution, high-throughput triage and agent routing, task-specific fine-tuning, and turnkey vertical starting points.
