Light Field Primitives: differentiable primitives replace dense ray databases for real-time novel view synthesis

An arXiv paper by Liang Chen, Jimmy Ren et al. introduces Light Field Primitives (LFP), a new formulation for novel view synthesis.
- Idea: replace the dense ray database with a compact set of differentiable primitives in the classical two-plane 4D ray parameterization; each primitive condenses a group of rays into one learned record
- Rendering: a camera ray is rendered by compositing responses from all primitives it elicits; scenes optimize directly from posed images and render in real time
- Structural edge: because primitives live in ray space, optical/appearance effects become native behaviors of one shared renderer — with minimal changes it supports multi-scale anti-aliasing, defocus deblurring with refocusing, fisheye rendering, and transparent-object reconstruction via ray refraction
- Performance: competitive on standard benchmarks while unifying what previously required specialized frameworks
A structural route to unifying novel view synthesis pipelines that researchers in differentiable rendering will want to read.
