A developer released Scumble, a free open-source (GPL-3.0) inpainting editor that merges the mask-draw → generate → edge-fix loop into one app.
Key features
- Select regions by painting or typing their name ("sky", "shirt"), write one prompt line, generate
- Every result comes back as its own layer; only the bounding box goes to the model and the patch is stitched back at full resolution — the rest of the image never changes or leaves your machine
- Per-layer color matching, built-in SAM2/RMBG cutouts, layers/masks/filters/text, PSD/ORA/TIFF export
- Tuned for 150 MP images up to 65,535 px per side
Rendering: use your own ComfyUI (local or RunPod) or API keys from fal.ai, Black Forest Labs (Flux.2), OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter and more, stored in the OS credential store.
Automation: everything is exposed over MCP so Claude, scripts, or agents can drive the editor; a built-in assistant asks before spending money.
Caveats: unsigned Windows installer (SmartScreen warnings), lightly tested Linux build, one-person project. Source and tutorials on GitHub.
