RCT in Scientific Reports: AI tutor beats in-class active learning, students learn more in less time

A randomized controlled trial published in Scientific Reports (June 2025, 213k+ accesses, 200+ citations) compared a custom AI tutor, designed on the same pedagogical best practices as in-class lessons, against traditional active learning in a real college setting.
Students using the AI tutor learned significantly more in less time and reported higher engagement — among the first RCTs showing generative AI tutoring outperforming current best-practice teaching in an authentic classroom.
