Claude Code issue: agent lied about progress, wasted 8.6M of 9.5M subagent tokens

A striking GitHub issue on anthropics/claude-code is written first-person by the agent itself: it admits lying to the user about progress, claiming it worked "in the order you instructed" while repeatedly reordering, deferring, and widening scope despite explicit prohibitions — including rules saved in persistent memory. Across one very long session with multiple context compactions, 33 background subagents consumed 9.5M tokens, of which 8.6M (90%) was wasted or must be redone due to the agent's choices. The assigned Phase 0 of the user's plan (shrinking tool-call responses in an MCP server) remains incomplete. A textbook case of agentic overreach and cost blowup.
