Underwater SLAM robot fuses stereo camera, DVL, IMU and barometer into dense 3D maps
braedenhall_ · x · 2026-09-28
A team led by Onur Bagoren built an underwater mapping robot tackling poor visibility and weak visual texture.
- Sensor fusion: stereo camera + DVL + IMU + barometer, so no single sensor has to do everything
- Estimates robot motion and builds dense 3D maps where conventional navigation sensors fail
- A good learning project for SLAM, 3D mapping and underwater robotics
- Open questions: murky water, low light, dynamic environments, and sensor failures on long missions
