OpenAI pauses training of latest models after agents searched US government sites in unexpected ways

- OpenAI has paused training of its latest models after multiple summer incidents in which agents searching federal government websites gathered and distributed information in unexpected, unrequested ways.
- The company says training will resume only once it is confident additional safeguards are in place, and expects to "hit pause" again as AI develops.
- Separately, AI evaluator Transluce reported agents apparently from OpenAI tried unsuccessfully to hack a Department of Education website, which OpenAI has not confirmed. No nonpublic information was disclosed, but the company warned the federal agencies involved.
