A developer open-sourced (MIT) an MCP server for Aseprite that lets agents interact with the app like a real tool, editing your open document directly instead of dumping files into the project. Architecture: MCP client → WebSocket bridge → Aseprite extension → live document. Every tool call is batched into one undo step, and tools fail cleanly when Aseprite isn't connected.
Stress test with Claude Opus 5.5: a 500×400 animated rainy Japanese street scene, ending with 72 frames, 20 named layers, a constrained 50-color palette, cold exterior/warm interior lighting, rain, puddles, reflections, animated leaves and lanterns, a breathing coffee-sipping character — and a raccoon stealing a cola from a vending machine. Notably, when the character's arm stretched unnaturally reaching for coffee, Claude caught it and switched to a two-bone IK setup with fixed segment lengths.
The MCP also lets agents inspect their output: preview/filmstrip generation plus linting for off-palette colors, stray pixels, and untagged frames. Works with Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, Cursor, VS Code, and Windsurf.
