Economist argues popular practice is observationally equivalent to copy-paste

Economist Paul Novosad pushed back on a popular practice described by @patricksturg: while fine in principle if everyone did it honestly, the practice is often observationally equivalent to simply Cmd-C/Cmd-V, making it indistinguishable from outright copying. He argues it simply doesn't work in equilibrium — "we want to avoid equilibria where bad actors are pooled with good actors."
