Cloudflare brings native Rust and Tokio apps to Workers via new Emscripten target for wasm-bindgen

Cloudflare announced the first public experimental preview of the wasm32-unknown-emscripten Rust compiler target for wasm-bindgen, enabling native Rust code — including Tokio-based apps — to run on Workers.
- Toolchain integration: Google's Portable Toolchains team initiated the work over a year ago; Emscripten now drives the build while wasm-bindgen emits embeddable JS bindings, resolving the conflict where both tools claimed control of Wasm loading and JS generation.
- Tokio support: Workers are single-threaded inside a JS event loop, clashing with Tokio's blocking semantics. Cloudflare contributed patchsets supporting both JSPI (suspensible Wasm stacks) and event-loop runtime integration; the first target patch has landed upstream in Tokio.
- Demo: a native Rust Minecraft server (Pumpkin) runs in a Durable Object with real TCP sockets via Tokio.
- Most Rust libraries work out of the box; libc, socket2 and Mio needed minor patches. Example apps are available to try today.
